Practices in the area of health have been fundamental to maintain and strengthen the care and quality of life of the children of the Santa Rita de Cascia Home. At this time of year with rainfall and respiratory peaks, respiratory and pulmonary diseases are very common in places inhabited by children. This is why the coordinated work carried out by the Foundation’s therapist, Angie Paola Yepes, together with Luz Adriana Prieto and the 8th and 9th grade students, has made it possible to overcome this difficult phase, without presenting any serious cases on the part of the patients.
Teacher Luz Adriana leads two groups of practice students and has focused all her efforts on the diagnostic management and treatment of all children. During this last period of the year, the practice of cardiorespiratory therapy made a series of advances to prevent infections, to check that there were no hospitalizations and to establish new strategies by scholars and the multidisciplinary team of the foundation, achieving excellent results through the use of different types of tools.
This large team of professionals demonstrated their high level of commitment to the children of the Institution by providing clear and concise recommendations on the need to use oxygen in patients who require it, as well as on the use of inhaled medicines. In addition, the students prepared three infographics and a booklet on first aid for patients with disabilities, developed management protocols such as oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, a complete inventory of inputs and devices for knowledge and management in peak respiratory situations, and set up an emergency kit and rapid response to risk situations that may arise.
Aware of the needs within the home, this group also conducted various advocacy and prevention trainings for the entire interdisciplinary team and other students. In this way, professionals from our organization, such as Angie Paola Yepes, who is in charge of the area of respiratory therapy, strengthen their work, through the support of professional practitioners, who are indispensable to benefit the health and quality of life of children.
