Cerebral paralysis is a condition that affects more than 6 out of every 1,000 children around the world. In Colombia, there are nearly 300,000 children living in this situation and 70 per cent are living below the poverty line. We must continue to build a policy that provides comprehensive protection for these families so that they can strengthen them and develop tools that will allow them to better travel this path.
We know that a nation that does not take good care of its sick children has no reason to feel proud and developed, that is why it is necessary to strengthen, build and start up specialized day centers, such as the “Los Angeles Life Center” that is being built in the municipality of Tocancipá, where we can provide a daily transdisciplinary care to these children, while their caregivers can be active at work and get the resources for their care, returning at the end of a day of therapy and play, to a home warm and full of love.
At present, the Fundación Proyecto Unión and Santa Rita de Cascia in Bogotá care for a large number of children with cerebral paralysis whom, for some reason, their families were unable to take care of. The mission of the two organizations is to provide them with the necessary care and attention, as well as learning tools so that through education we can achieve their development, generating important changes that will lead to the progress of society.
In this way we will ensure that these children are recognized every day as an active part of society, being a light that moves forward before us, opening paths of patience, courage and love. Fernando Quintero MD.
