After suffering a serious accident due to a gas explosion in her hometown in Peru, Mrs. Olga Salas lost a two year old son, a two month old baby survived her and her other two older children were seriously injured. Last June 18, looking for a better quality of life for her children and responding to the call of the Burn Foundation, “Piel para Renacer”, she traveled to Bogota, leaving her baby at home and came to our home “Casa de los Angeles” with her sons Mauricio and Jesus to receive treatment for their burns.
Thanks to the agreement with this foundation, we were able to offer for two months a place away from home for this family facing adversity, while they received medical attention, during this period we were able to take care of Jesus and Mauricio, simple and brave young men who underwent two hand and face surgeries at the Santafé Clinic. This family, in spite of the difficult situation, shared their customs with the members of the foundation’s team, participated in the different activities of the house, received food, therapies and affection in return, they gave us a source of inspiration for their admirable example of overcoming.
During their free time this Peruvian family visited the facilities of the Jaime Duque Park, which adjoins our house, where they enjoyed the attractions, and thanks to the coordination of our physiotherapist Lilián Beltrán, they put on their aprons to prepare the best dishes of their gastronomic culture to the park staff, with the help of the Chef, being this activity an invaluable therapy to strengthen their recovery.
“Thank you for welcoming us, in these months I made a nice friendship with everyone, I really enjoyed being in the kitchen helping and learning,” said Olga. Today, after two months and with the desire to return home and see their baby, they were able to travel thanks to the support of the Institutional Development Team, who managed with the support of angel donors their return tickets.
We fulfilled our mission of giving back hope and that fills us with motivation to continue transforming realities. Thanks to Olga and her children for teaching us that in life we should not ask ourselves the why of things but the what for, today this family leaves us a great teaching of what a mother’s love can do, crossing borders for her children”.
